harold, the welly, 6-6-13
Harold is a former movie projectionist, and still sometimes covers for others at cinemas like the Nova in Carlton. He loves his movies and we talked at some length about Cinema Paradiso, and Harold told me of his own rather perilous experiences with the hazardous nitrate film of an earlier era.
For this portrait, amongst other approaches I wanted to play with the idea of Harold sitting in a picture theatre watching a film. The dark room there at the welly, especially on a rather gloomy winter’s day, helped with the feel. When I noticed the cool bank of windows on the opposite wall reflected in Harold’s glasses, the disparate threads of my idea came together and the portrait was complete.
I like the result and hope this picture makes it up onto the wall at Ballarat in August/September. To find out, you’ll just have to visit BIFB'13.
