people, the human condition, life
I feel that perhaps I should write something about Mary Ellen Mark. At the same time, I realize that there has been much written already, and I have agreed with all of it. I feel that Mary Ellen herself would want us all to get on with our vocation, our calling - our art, if you like.
So for me, in the first instance this is to revisit my negative files and find pictures that I would like to be recognized for, scan them and make them known more widely.
This is a picture I made in 1976 and it meant a great deal to me at the time - it still does, nearly forty years later. I like the light, the shearer’s bearing and a sense of classicism - in relation both to European art and the Australian “click go the shears” ethos.
And, this week in particular, I like that it’s dark and moody.
RIP Mary Ellen.
