While looking back on your old negative files or old digital files do you ever find lost gems that you then wonder why you hadn’t seen them in the first (or second, or nth) place?
For me, this is one such photo. On the proof sheet it looks, quite frankly, muddy and boring, so I always skimmed over it. Of course this may well be because I tended to think of proof sheets as a necessary evil, and didn’t take too much care with them. But last time I was looking through, searching for something else, it struck me that this particular frame was probably worth a closer look. And this little swan emerged from an ugly duckling.
I guess sometimes it takes time and quite a few views to see some of the ones that don’t shout out to you at first. Maybe when we are too close to the experience of shooting we tend to dismiss some shots or blocks of shots as not being as good as something that came a bit later, or we just diss it out-of-hand because it doesn’t look any good as a tiny proof.
Anyway, I’m glad I found this one, albeit belatedly. It now goes in my portfolio of best shots, and people seem to like it. So, in fact, this makes it for me a long-lost treasure.
